Tesla is today the most valuable automaker in the world by market capitalization beating out industry giants like General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen group, and even Toyota.
It has achieved this impressive feet despite a short operating history, a limited product lineup, and even relatively modest sales figures compared to these much more established entities.
In spite of all of these indicators, investors are willing to pay more than five times as much for the same stake in Tesla as compared to the more traditional automakers.
So what is going on here?
What do investors see in Tesla that a rational person may not?
What is the companies vision to truly justify being valued this highly?
and could this all be a charismatic CEO taking a pool of naive investors for a ride?

You're bang on the money about Tesla not being a car company. This kind of misunderstanding is common, especially within the markets and media. I work for another tech company that has been referred to as something else for 20 years, only now as our tech is being licenced worldwide are so called experts starting to realize we were always just a tech company.

I am so happy to see that economies of scale chart. I've explained it a dozen times, I've argued it with investors and they all go blank when you get to the point that eventually scale increases costs. Even worse when you highlight that scale reduces flexibility (downturn in market and while you can cut the personnel you can't cut the fixed overhead, AVT, and debt attached to that scale). Economies of scale is a massively misunderstood concept in the general public.

Good points about virtual integration. I'm a little frustrated that you posted this in november 2020 and only talk about 2019 revenue when at that point Tesla did their 4th quarter in a row in green and there where already big talks about it being included in S&P500. Imagine what will happen to their margins when they keep scaling towards 'economy of scale'. You also failed to mention they had started rolling out model Y by this point. Good on you for finding out tesla is more then a car company, but besides selfdriving (wich is still way underrated), they are solving many AI questions, they are growing their battery storage and solar roof department and have many more revenue streams coming up. By the end of 2020 the managed to sell 500k cars while toyota made 9.2 million. That's only 1/18, not 1/30 (but you didn't have these numbers in november so fair enough)

@economics explained So I do consult on Toyota Production System. What's interesting is, vertical integration is also a big part of TPS principles (As well as horizontal integration strategies). For some reason, Toyota has slowed down quite a bit on that concept of vertical integration, which is probably the cause of stagnation within Toyota. Tesla's issue seems that they only understanding one part of vertical integration, which you highlighted: Take the mark up of the supplier. However, the biggest beneficiary of Vertical integration is just completely and fundamentally change the way you do processes. This doesn't seem to be happening, and hence not generating the cost-benefit that it can. It'll be interesting if they can evolve the process to further the vertical integration. I have successfully incorporated vertical integration multiple times and the cost-benefit is insane. It's a really smart approach for Tesla, and hopefully, they can innovate the process in between.

There are three facts that weren't touched on. 1) Musk had already made 2 fortunes before he invested in Tesla. 2) He is a software guy. 3) his avowed goal is to address climate change. The people who have made Tesla stock prices what they are, believe Musk knows how to make good on the job he started. Or did I mean jobs?

Auto companies did this in the 1970s. AC Delco was a spin off of GM. What they found was that it became about empire building on the part of the CEOs. Put another way the companies discovered they could make more money focusing on their "core competencies" which is a term from the 1980s.

Long time Tesla fan and investor starting in 2013. But even I had to sell off a portion of it this week. I love the ride its been, but with far more competition on the immediate horizon, it could have an impact this and next year. but the biggest problem I see with the current stock price (aprox. $850). is that it assumes that the Tesla full self driving feature will be realized very soon. The problem isn't the technology.....their software system and autopilot could be "market ready" by 2022. The problem is even if the tech is ready, the legislation and politics are still far from allowing it. For that to go through, it will need to clear so many hurdles in federal and state levels, at the speed government takes to implement change in a democratic environment (in other words eons). I think places like China, Singapore, will be able to push this through much faster.

Bit unfair, Tesla will clearly make a profit in 2020. Though profitability is not a major concern for a hyper growth company. Aka, grow like “Amazon.” They will reinvest their top line profit into growth and R&D, to accumulate market share and increase their technological advantage. Tesla have something else though that’s not shown in any balance sheet, market leading technology and pace of execution. The two main reasons why they have already won this decade. This will become obvious.

Great video! You leave out one very important point about valuation. The desire to get a thing done. I call it the Greta Thunberg effect on Tesla valuation. Tesla attacks climate change and fast. It is that, which justifies the Public's voting with their dollars for Tesla to succeed rapidly that is justifying the pouring of assets (cash) into Tesla stock.

Ok boys and girls, with this video you can see a very telling example of why there are not economists that use macroeconomy and micro economy at investing in the list Forbes of the richest people of the world, there are 0 of them there. Economist are not good at understanding companies, valuing them and many other things. it doesn’t matter how many Greek letters they can understand in a mathematical equation. Even more if the research is this poor at the moment of talking about this topic, I mean I don’t want to be a dickhead but I have to be honest here.

well if you exclude the " expense" of Elons stock options which costs them nothing they make lots of money without selling credits.doesn't matter where the energy comes from it's better . even if it's from coal ( only 20 % in u.s. ) because their electric cars are over 80% efficient . they reduce the price of the cars because they CAN get revenue from selling credits. they are out to sell cars cheaper in higher volume not crush the competitors . their goal is to stop climate change not make a ton of money.

@Johan Gustav Lammers I get your point that this is rather a revolution than an incremental evolution for the car industry. But where do you cross the line to distinguish between 'tech and just manufacturing'? Tesla has the adventage today, but just produced 370k cars whereas Toyota and VW produced both over 10mio cars. In the following years their business processes will converge, like in the 80/90s with the Japanese car companies methods like lean production (e.g. kaban, just-in-time, production, Total-Quality Managements, 5S, Single-minute Digit exchange of die (SMED))

@Johan Gustav Lammers Multi-industry company plain and simple. The electric car is even older than the otto or diesel engine. Renewable energy is not new. The first electric battery was invented in 1800. By your definition every other (car) manufacturer would be a tech company too. The label is more important for the stock valuation and the 'visions' of the financial analysts than the actual business. Also Tesla will get a lot of trouble in Europe, because of the 'General Data Protection Regulation' act

Or...the absurd "valuation" has a rational explanation: the obscene amounts of monetary "injections" into the stock market come from the QE programs, and are artificially inflating the prices of all stocks; some more than others. That same QE price inflation is also showing up in housing prices now because investors who first get their hands on the flood of money use it to - wait for it - find ways to further enrich themselves. Only later on when some of the excess printed currency falls out of circulation in the stock or housing markets does it end up circulating into more day-to-day type markets, such as markets for foodstuffs. We're seeing this pain in grocery stores now, with prices up about 5% over this time last year. With more of a steady stream of QE, the more we all start to see prices rise like this, only now - it starts to approach those % increases on a MoM scale (borderline hyperinflation), instead of only at a YoY scale (still ridiculously high inflation).

@MrRedsjack But they profits don't come from the cars per say, they profits come from the fact they are making electric cars while others aren't so this allows them to sell credit from electric cars that other companies buy,if more companies are making electric cars they can't sell those regulatory credits and the new factories can't save this.

Didnt Elon Musk get notice from SEC at some point for his tweets, that there was problem as both insider, owner and using publicity, which affect stock price, that it was considered insider trading of sorts..

Unmanned taxis are a nice idea in theory but will be terrible in practice. You call and order a taxi and the vehicle arrives you open the door and the smell hits you from a previous occupant who either threw up or relieved themselves in the vehicle. A human driver mostly stops this an unmanned vehicle will need to go to a base to be checked between every passenger just in case.

Tesla is going up for the same reason bitcoin is going up people want a return on the money they have and bank saving interest rates have been in the toilet for nearly two decades now. So because millions of people have money to invest they invest in the things with the highest return. And unlike how normally it will be a bubble and pop this time it won't be for a while several years at least because these people have nothing else to put their money in so they pick the winners and keep them propped up. The fact national banks the world over are investing more than ever in the largest 2000 odd companies is going to keep those companies market caps high so that they continue to get that return on investment.
