Nothing better than getting a comment from a flat earther like this... (maladetts) @David Barker There's no orbiters, David. There's no spaceships to launch them and send them all the way there. We have no such thing as interplanetary travel just yet. We don't even know if that reddish spot we're seeing in telescopes is a solid planet or totally something else, a celestial body of a totally different nature, that will remain forever unknown to us. As for existing rocketry, NASA had to use the services of old Soviet rockets back from the 60's during the past ten years, and a recent American-launched rocket to the most-proximate ISS was given as a HISTORIC ACHIEVEMENT. Get a reality check and get your facts straight.

Can anyone tell me, all the small intricate pipe work around the raptor...is this for testing or will this all be present on the ‘mature’ engine. Just thought it looks rather delicate to undergo rigours of landing on a rock and dust rich planet with little ability for quick swap or repair!

    1. David
      David
      Maand geleden

Just think about the wires and tubes on your car engine. Sensors for oil flow and water flow, temperature of the oil and water, O2 sensors in the exhaust, vacuum feedback from the engine to control the advance and retard of the spark in a petrol motor. All these sort of things are required on a rocket engine as well, to control throttle and control valves.

    2. Antonio Sanchez
      Antonio Sanchez
      Maand geleden

These raptors they have now are pretty accurate to what the mature engine will look like, they'll probably find ways to simplify it though. They're still working on perfecting the raptor for its needs so I'm sure they'll increase the rate of production and swapping or repairing.

Question for anyone. What if Elon made a star ship that did not come back from space by that I mean the starship only has a detachable lower engine or lower ring. What amount of the starship could used. The other question I have is what type a size and shape could be fitted by the heavy lift rocket. Could This be larger that the starship. What would you place on the heavy lift rocked.

    1. David
      David
      Maand geleden

He already has plans to send some that will not return. But once they get into Low Earth Orbit, all the fuel to get it there, will have been all used up. SO he needs to send other Starships that will carry fuel to fuel the orbiting Starship, so that it can go on to the Moon or elsewhere, using the RaptorVAC engines. The heavy lift rocket is currently the same diameter as the Starship (9meters). Whatever goes on top has to have the capacity to rocket itself to orbit, or it's coming back to Earth again. Whatever is on top will weigh the same as the Starship does fully loaded (around 1,450 tonne). Whatever you are sending has to take that mass and utilize it to get to whatever your objective is.

There was no need to trigger them, as the rocket was not 'out of control' in the sense that it was NOT heading away from it's intended trajectory. The explosives may have burned up. To make them explode, they need a trigger explosion within the explosive material.

It would make sense. That way they can try a different configuration eg re-start at a lower height and have the engines fire at 60% throttle for a shorter amount of time. Keep testing until they get a failure, then move on to SN11. That way you build a bigger database and can start to find the 'sweet spot' for the most efficient method of landing with the Raptor Engine.
