This is Cyprus, an absolutely gorgeous nation in the Mediterranian filled with beautiful little towns a laid-back way of life and an economy that is supposedly for sale.
That’s right, a fair few of you watching may have seen headlines that apparently Amazon is going to purchase the island nation and set up its global headquarters there to have its very own little tax haven.
This story was originally published by Saxo Bank which is a small European investment bank with a lot of operations in the area.
Now spoiler alert, it’s not going to happen, but it’s not as crazy as it sounds and one day it genuinely could make sense as a sound business plan. So stick around, partially because I need that average watch time so that the youtube algorithm may bless this video, but mostly because this bizarre prediction can tell us a lot about possibly the weirdest economy in the world.
There is a very good reason that Cyprus was singled out as the most likely country to be purchased in the 2020 national yearbook and that is because of its long history of hmmm let’s say being very agreeable to the whim of institutions with a healthy bankroll.
But of course, the nation is fascinating for so many more reasons not least of which is that half of the country is technically subject to an illegal occupation of the territory of the EU.
And it gets even weirder than that, if you were to look at the island of Cyprus you would be forgiven for thinking it is just one little ol country, but depending on who you ask it has as many as 4 different entities claiming sovereignty over what is a very beautiful but otherwise very barren piece of land.
So there is a lot going on here and as always the best way to make sense of a lot of this is to look at the economics of the island to work out what is truly motivating all of these powerful institutions that apparently want to own Cyprus.

What is really driving the economy of Cyprus?
Why are so many people laying claim to it?
How have these tensions come back to bit them in recent years?
Why would it make the ideal country for some global megacorporation like amazon to buy?
And of course, once we have made sense of all of that, we can go ahead and put Cyprus on the economics explained national leaderboard.

You can't buy a whole country, You would need the agreement of every single person who owns a residential or commercial property, plus the approval of the government. It's not going to happen. Besides, Cyprus is still divided into 2 countries.

Completely ignoring a terrorist organization called EOKA-B staged a coup on Cyprus and started to target Turkish Cypriots which triggered Turkish intervention in 1974 and Turkey had every right to intervene due it is a guarantor state of Cyprus!! Completely ignoring UN tried to reunite Cyprus since then, in fact in 2004 there was a UN plan called Annan plan but in the referendum Greek side refused the plan by 75% while calling a UN plan ''unfair'', on the other hand Turkish side accepted the plan by 65% and Cyprus was united today if Greek side also accepted!! Claiming Cyprus found ''trillions of worth gas'' while in reality Cyprus only found 300 BCM which worth around 40 billion dollars and Cyprus will only earn 10 billion dollars from it according to contracts they made!! Sadly this video has such an extreme bias and many wrong information you should question every information given by this channel with a grain of salt...

We're living in the darkest timeline when the greco-Turkish conflict over Cyprus going back centuries is solved by our internet overlords

    Maand geleden

Fact # 1: Cyprus is not and has never been a Greek island. Cyprus was occupied by many ancient empires and peoples ranging from the Hittites to the Venetians. In Hellenic times, the Greeks established trading colonies on the island, but according to British historian George C. Hill, in his authoritative book The History of Cyprus, “Cyprus was never an integral part of Hellenic Greece”( vol. IV; pp. 488-9). In more recent history, Cyprus was a territory of the Ottoman Empire from 1571 to 1878. After being ruled by the Ottoman Turks for more than 300 years, the island was ceded to a short-lived British rule. In 1960, the Republic of Cyprus was established as a partnership state between the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots. Accordingly, both parties would rule the island conjointly; neither side would be able to impose its political will on the other. Fact # 2: There is no “Cyprus nation”; but rather, there are two distinct peoples that inhabit the island, the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots. The first Greek Cypriot leader, Archbishop Makarios, was first to admit this fact: “No Greek who knows me can ever believe that I would wish to work for the creation of a Cypriot national awareness. The agreements have created a state, but not a nation” (Archbishop Makarios, in a statement to the Cyprus Mail of March 28, 1963). Fact # 3: There are no majorities and minorities in Cyprus, but two peoples of equal political and legal status. The relationship between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots has never been one of “majority and minority”. The U.N. secretary general’s statement of September 12, 2000, among other documents, supports the principle of political equality of the two parties. It refers to a “comprehensive settlement enshrining a new partnership” and stresses that each of the two parties “represents its side and no-one else”. That the Annan Plan was put to separate simultaneous referenda on April 24, 2004 confirmed the fact that there exist two equal sides or peoples on the island, neither of which represents the other. Fact # 4: The Cyprus problem did not emerge in 1974, but in 1963 when an armed onslaught was launched against the Turkish Cypriots in order to annex the island to Greece. The arrival to the island of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) in 1964 alone confutes the claim that the problem began in 1974. On June 13, 1965, Lieutenant General George Karayannis, mainland Greek army officer in command of the “Cyprus army” at the time, told the Athens daily Ethnikos Kiryx: “In August 1960… President Makarios decided to proceed with … organizing the Greek Cypriots for battle.” “When the Turkish Cypriots objected to the amendment of the constitution, Makarios put his plan into effect and the Greek Cypriot attack began in December 1963” (Karayannis, Ethnikps Kiryx, June 15, 1965). The UNFICYP arrived to the island to quell the violence unleashed by the Greek Cypriot side and to provide a buffer between the two communities. Fact # 5: Turkey did not “invade” nor is she “occupying” Cyprus. The Turkish intervention of July 20, 1974 did not come about as an “invasion” but in response to a coup organized by the Greek junta on July 15, 1974. It came in the wake of 11 years of bloodshed and agitation perpetrated by the Greek Cypriots with the aim of annexing the island to Greece (ie Enosis). Nikos Sampson openly said: “Had Turkey not intervened I would not only have proclaimed Enosis, I would have annihilated the Turks in Cyprus.” (Eleftherotipia, February 26, 1981). The Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe concluded that “Turkey exercised its right of intervention in accordance with the article IV of the Guarantee Treaty of 1960” (Resolution No. 573, 29 July 1974). To portray the Turkish intervention as an “invasion” and “occupation” as is common these days constitutes a grave injustice and distortion of the facts. Fact # 6: The Greek Cypriot side is not the victim, but the perpetrator of the 40-50 year old Cyprus conflict. This has been confirmed by international media reports of the time: “In Cyprus terror continues. Right now we are witnessing the exodus of Turks from villages. Thousands of people are abandoning their homes, lands, herds: Greek terrorism is relentless…” (Il Giorno, January 14, 1964, report by Giorgio Bocco). “Greek Cypriot fanatics appear bent on a policy of genocide…” (The Washington Post, February 17, 1964). And here is an example from the U.N. Secretary-General’s reports: “The economic restrictions being imposed against the Turkish Cypriot community, which in some instances has been so severe as to amount to veritable siege, indicate that the government of Cyprus seeks to force a potential solution by economic pressure.” (Report of the U.N. Secretary General s/5950 of September 10, 1964). The real victims of this conflict continue to be the Turkish Cypriots. Fact # 7: The Turkish Cypriot side is not the intransigent party blocking the solution of the Cyprus question. Negotiations for a solution have been carried out under the good offices mission of the U.N. Secretary-General since 1968. The Turkish Cypriot side continues to participate in these negotiations in a constructive manner. The aim has always been to establish a new partnership state between the two sides on the basis of well-established U.N. parameters which emerged over the course of long years of negotiations - principles such as the political equality of the two sides, bi-zonality and bi-communality. After numerous failed attempts to resolve the problem, a unique opportunity to break the stalemate emerged with the UN brokered Annan Plan. The Turkish Cypriot people approved the Plan by 65 percent despite the great sacrifices it entailed for them. The Greek Cypriot side, however, rejected the Plan by 76 percent. This rejection, once again made clear that neither the Greek Cypriot peoples nor their leaders were ready to share power with the Turkish Cypriots on the basis of equality. In view of their affirmative vote, the international community made numerous pledges to lift the restrictions on the social, economic and political development of the Turkish Cypriot people. However, seven years have passed since the historic referenda of April 2004 and Turkish Cypriots continue to be kept in isolation due to Greek Cypriot obstructionism and the lack of political will on the part of the international community. The unilateral membership of the Greek Cypriot side into the E.U. without first reaching a settlement has made the Greek Cypriot leadership even more intransigent vis-à-vis the settlement of the Cyprus problem. Since its accession to the E.U., the Greek Cypriot side has been exploiting its membership in order to block every measure aimed at easing the isolation of the Turkish Cypriots. It appears that the goal of the Greek Cypriot leadership is to postpone a settlement in Cyprus with the hope that the passage of time may do away with the established U.N. parameters and consequently the fundamental and legitimate rights of the Turkish Cypriot people.

Great video. But completley unfactual regarding Turkey. Read the genocide files. A Greek general ordered an attack on Turkish civilians killing them in the streets. Turkey landed forces to protect its people and would have taken the entire island within a day would it not have been for the President of the USA who ordered Turkey go no further. Love your videos but this is an exceptionally touchy subject and very misunderstood.

Dumbest clickbait video of the year. How do you buy a country? You can't. Amazon "buying" Cyprus is a dumb conspiracy theory that most people have never heard of, and this video doesn't even elaborate on this. It just rambles on and on about irrelevant things.

I'd venture to guess the battle over Cyprus has more to do with it being the fabled birthplace of Aphrodite. Religion has a lot more to do with the event we are in the middle of than most are aware.

I haven't read through the 2,000+ comments, so forgive me if this has already been mentioned (it probably has), but quite a bit of footage of "Cyprus" used in your video isn't of Cyprus. You might want to sort that out. The key reason is that now I can't believe everything you're saying.

Everyone shitting on Turks occupieing Cyprus as if they had a choice... Greek's started the war by slaughtering innocent Turkish cypriots to the point where Turkey was forced to react and defend the remaining Turkish cypriots from being slaughtered by the Greeks. My family is both Greek and Turkish but for some reason Greek's never acknowledge that this war was started by the Greeks. Both are equally to blame but deep seeded racist people spread bullshit information making the Turks look like a horrible nation. Turkey did what any nation would do to protect their citizens from anhiliation. Wake up u fools

Cyprus is NOT a 'barron piece of land'! I'm from Cyprus and in fact, from the north which is under Turkish occupation since the invasion of 1974! Please get your facts right!!!!!!

I have been following your videos for a while now as I found them quite interesting/informative. However, this video changed that. I am actually from North Cyprus (Turkish Cypriot). I do not live in the country any longer as there are no real 'opportunities' for people like us, as the country is not recognized internationally, as Turkey occupies the North part. "Occupation" is an interesting term, the reason for that occupation is not explained in this video, which is a massive oversight from your end and it could have been done within a minute. I am aware this is not the 'main plot' of your video, but when you are talking about a serious political issue like this (or even mentioning it briefly), I would have expected a channel like yours (nearly 1m followers) to properly research your topic to avoid giving any misinformation. So I will provide you the details, as being a Cypriot who does not live in the country any longer due to the 'occupation' of 'Evil Turkey'' as portrayed by you on this video. Brief History: Greek Cypriots were the majority on the Island with a sizeable Turkish minority. This was noted by the British who ruled the island back then and Republic of Cyprus was formed (1960) with representatives from both sides (Greeks and Turkish Cypriots, majority being Greek Cypriots). If you need a bit more information on this government, a simple Wikipedia search will give you an idea of how this government worked. A fascist group within Greek Cypriot community started a civil war, with the aim of making the whole island ruled by Greek Cypriots and Greece as they were not happy with the powers given to the Turkish Cypriots within the Republic. Not all Greek Cypriots agreed to this, as I had many Greek Cypriot friends who always wanted to reunite the island. My mother/grandmother was a hostage in the war, my grandfather was involved in 'contacting Turkey' in this 'occupation'. Civil war lasted from 1963 to 1974, when Turkey finally decided to come to the island to save/liberate the Turkish Cypriots, as the other guarantors of the island (British and Greeks) did not to do much to resolve the issues. Turkey's action of coming to the island is seen as breaking the international law, the Treaty of Guarantee of Cyprus. As a result, the north side was left unrecognized for years which stopped its development. Since Greek Cypriots have been admitted the EU in 2004, they effectively blocked any viable terms of unification of the island - as they do not really need Turkish Cypriots for anything now as EU membership comes with its benefits. Most Turkish Cypriots do not like the fact that Turkey still 'occupies' North Cyprus, but it was necessary for 'survival' back then. If you actually properly researched this matter, I imagined you would have amended a few wordings you used in this video. Due to years of not getting any results with unification attempts, Turkey started using North Cyprus for its own strategic purposes and increased the population of the north side via sending many Turkish people to the island. At this point in time (2021), I can very easily say that real 'Turkish Cypriots' will be pretty much extinct after my generation. I do not hate the people involved in this issue, Greek Cypriots/Turkey, it is too late for that and i have no time for calling people names any longer. It is what it is. If you want to make the world a better place and avoid instigating hate, you have a responsibility to properly research things you are talking about, when you especially have nearly 1m followers. Be better.
