I think a key part of the philosophy of Costco and Trader Joe's is reducing cognitive load. Costco uses utter austerity, while Trader Joe's uses friendliness, but they both also use a deliberately small selection of items chosen carefully enough that most customers can grab something and expect to enjoy it, removing the need to worry about which of a dozen similar products from various brands you should buy. Both also invest in quality of staff to reduce customer stress and avoid the hassle of coupon clipping and sale hunting by offering no way for diligent shoppers to get a better deal. The end result is an place which requires basically zero thought and costs no stress to get what you need out of, which break from the rat race of modern America.

Without reading most of the comments, I can already guess some will be complaining about the 99 year lease on HDBs. And without even going into the intricates, just for a moment, think, with your brain, what will happen in 50 years time if people can own it indefinitely. And also, use some common sense and start thinking, how safe will buildings be, even if it is build to be the best, after 100 years? These are things you don't need a phd in economics and civil engineering, to understand

Self taught coders are the worst. Yeah you can copy from stack overflow. Good job. Now you make my life hard because I can't understand your code. You copy paste. You don't understand how to refactor it. Forget being readable to another human, I doubt you can read it yourself, 2 days after you write it. I absolutely loathe dirty coders.

15:00 that's a good description of almost any economic factor, honestly. A giant machine with unlabeled levers and dials, where a little bit is known about a few of them but it's hard to say what most do, how they interact, or whether a change in settings is reversible.

I live in Canada and have followed this story from the beginning. I think both US and China are spying through their respective 5G networks. Here in Canada where China has less power then USA does, I trust Huawei but if I were in Vietnam or Laos, I would go with something other then Huawei since China has more power there... I don't see either player as trustworthy

Don't forget that disrespect cuts both ways. There's been a just-as-concerted defamatory effort in US media against everything Chinese. Funny how it all started around the mid-2010's when China started overtaking the US in economic power. Also, the narrative that all Chinese citizens are mindlessly brainwashed by the CCP is BS. Most people can (and do) still use VPNs to access foreign news sites. Criticism of the CCP on state-run social media sites does go on. Also, a good proportion of Chinese urbanites are either themselves educated abroad or have family/ friends educated abroad. If Americans are going to call China a propaganda state well then, guess what? They probably live in one too.

The question how North Korea works is really fascinating because everyone has expected it to stop working decades ago. It probably will collapse in my lifetime and I will be interested to see whether an agreement can be found for Korean reunification. One thing is for sure, China will have a similarly allergic reaction to US military bases in North Korea as Russia had when Ukraine wanted to join the EU. They cannot simply tolerate one of the US' closest allies in South Korea to suddenly border them and assurances that will placate the PRC will come at a steep price. At the same time China will know that the US will not fight a war over North Korea, so I'd most expect that when the current regime fails entirely that North Korea will become an actual Chinese puppet state. The best reason for China to let North Korea go is that supporting it would cost billions each year.
